FDI and Universal dental chart with periodontal charting
BOC’s dental chart is a tooth chart inside every patient file, with FDI and Universal numbering and a mouth set for every age, on the web and in the BOC mobile app. Your dentists mark findings on each tooth, record bridges and implants across several teeth, plan treatment, follow the work to Done, and record six-site periodontal readings, all beside the patient’s visits and payments.
What it does
Turn on the dental feature and every patient file gets a Dental Chart tab. The chart shows the mouth in six parts, Upper Right, Upper Front, Upper Left, Lower Right, Lower Front, and Lower Left, with each tooth drawn and numbered. Switch the numbering between FDI (11 to 48) and Universal (1 to 32, with primary teeth A to T), and pick a Mouth set that matches the patient’s age: Primary dentition (0–5), Early mixed (6–7), Mid mixed (8–9), Late mixed (10–11), Permanent without wisdom teeth (12–15), or Permanent dentition (16+). A new chart opens on the mouth set for the patient’s age, taken from the date of birth. Add tooth places any tooth by its number, including primary teeth 51 to 85, and lists the teeth Expected for current age first.
Click a tooth to open it. The window names it, for example 26, First Molar (Upper), and has two tabs: Tooth condition / findings and History / Treatment. Add finding marks what is on the tooth today, such as caries, a filling, a crown, a missing tooth, or an implant, with a note. Findings are grouped by topic, from tooth presence, decay and wear, and fillings to roots and canals, gums and bone, position and bite, and trauma, and each one can be Confirmed, Suspected, or Unresolved. Findings describe the tooth, while services and prices stay on the visit.
Under the chart, three lists follow the treatment: History / Done Work, Preparing, and Treatment Plan / Remaining. In the demo clinic, a composite filling on tooth 16 sits in History / Done Work with its date, and a porcelain crown on tooth 26 waits on the plan. Small badges on each tooth count its done and planned work, so the dentist sees at a glance which teeth need attention.
Multi-tooth findings and the periodontal chart
Some findings cover several teeth. Add multi-tooth finding records bridges with their abutments and pontic, implant-supported prostheses, space maintainers, orthodontic brackets and arches, and contacts between neighbouring teeth, and it records periodontitis with its stage, grade, and extent. BOC checks the shape of each record as you build it: a bridge needs an abutment at each end, the teeth must be neighbours on one arch, and a Nance appliance goes on the upper arch.
The Periodontal Chart takes six sites per tooth (MB, B, DB / ML, L, DL): probing depth in millimetres, bleeding on probing, recession, mobility (Miller 0–3), and furcation on molars (Hamp 0–3). Pockets of 4 mm are flagged, and 5 mm and above are marked deep. A preview on the Dental Chart tab shows the latest readings for each tooth, and View Full Periodontal Chart opens the full maxilla and mandible for charting.
From the chart to the chair and the cashier
Dental procedures and their prices live in Business Setup, under Services and Pricing, in the Dental Service catalog. Procedures are grouped as Crowns and Bridges, Extraction and Surgery, Root Canal Treatment, Fillings and Restorations, Cleaning and Prevention, Examination and Diagnosis, Cosmetic, Dentures and Prosthetics, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Periodontics, and Implants, and you enable the ones your clinic offers with a price for each.
In the Dr. Room, each dental item on the visit moves to Preparing and then to Done, and the dentist chooses whether to bill it now or when it becomes Done. The visit amount at the cashier follows that choice, with due, paid, and remaining. When two people work on the same tooth, BOC keeps the chart consistent: if someone saved first, it shows the latest chart and asks you to review and save again. The same chart, findings, and periodontal screens open in the BOC app, so a dentist can check a tooth from a phone.
How it works in BOC
- Turn on the dental feature. In Business Setup, Config, switch on Enable Dentist Feature. Every patient file then shows a Dental Chart tab.
- Set the mouth. Choose FDI or Universal numbering and the Mouth set for the patient’s age. Use Add tooth for any extra tooth.
- Record findings. Click a tooth and press Add finding, or use Add multi-tooth finding for bridges, implants, and appliances.
- Follow the treatment. Planned procedures sit under Treatment Plan / Remaining, move to Preparing, and land in History / Done Work.
- Chart the gums. Open View Full Periodontal Chart and enter depth, bleeding, recession, mobility, and furcation for each site.
Who it is for
Dental clinics Dentists chart findings, plan treatment, and record periodontal readings in the same file the front desk uses to book and bill.
Clinics A multi-specialty clinic with a dental chair charts its dental patients next to their other visits, prescriptions, and insurance.

Questions
Does BOC have a dental chart?
Yes. When the dental feature is on, every patient file has a Dental Chart tab with FDI or Universal numbering, findings on each tooth, a treatment plan, done work, and a periodontal chart. It works on the web and in the BOC app.
Does BOC support Universal tooth numbering?
Yes. The FDI and Universal buttons above the chart switch every tooth number at once: FDI shows 11 to 48 and 51 to 85, and Universal shows 1 to 32 and A to T. The findings and the treatment plan stay on the same teeth, so each dentist reads the chart in the system they know, on the web and in the BOC app.
Can I chart children’s teeth?
Yes. Pick a Mouth set from Primary dentition (0–5) through the mixed stages to Permanent dentition (16+), and add primary teeth 51 to 85 by number. When a tooth is replaced, its notes stay on the FDI number.
Can I record a bridge or an implant across several teeth?
Yes. Add multi-tooth finding records bridges, implant prostheses, space maintainers, brackets, and periodontitis across the teeth they cover. BOC checks that the teeth are neighbours on the right arch and that a bridge has an abutment at each end.
Does BOC include a periodontal chart?
Yes. The Periodontal Chart records six sites per tooth: probing depth, bleeding on probing, recession, mobility (Miller 0–3), and furcation on molars (Hamp 0–3). Pockets of 4 mm are flagged, and 5 mm and above are marked deep.
How are dental procedures billed?
Procedures and prices come from the Dental Service catalog in Services and Pricing. In the Dr. Room the dentist moves each item to Preparing or Done and chooses to bill it now or when it is Done, and the cashier shows the visit’s due, paid, and remaining.
Who can edit the dental chart?
Roles have separate permissions to view, add, edit, and delete on the dental chart. An assistant can read the chart while the dentist changes it.
